Review: Search and State S1-J Riding Jacket

I’m not opposed to obnoxious kit. In fact, the louder my socks, the better. But when it comes to bike jackets, I prefer simplicity. I don’t want logos, extra pockets, or garish colors. I just want it to block the wind on cold descents, keep the rain out in a downpour and make sure my temperature stays regulated when I’m pedaling.

That’s the exact design ethos for the S1-J Riding Jacket from Search and State. It’s understated and paired down to the necessities but works great.

Like all of Search and State’s products, the S1-J is bomber because it uses the best materials on the market. In this case the jacket is built from Schoeller c-change, a top-of-the-line waterproof/breathable fabric that vents well and keeps the water out but is also supple and comfortable.

In terms of fit, the S1-J is snug but protects everything it should. There’s no extra material that will flap around in the wind but you don’t feel confined. A longer tail ensures the jacket doesn’t ride up when you’re down in the dropouts and longer sleeves provide a huge range of motion.

All of Search and State’s original garments are made in the United States—they’re actually sewn in the garment district in New York—and this adds to the appeal. The company is creating jobs, bringing manufacturing back to the States and ensuring the highest level of quality control.

The Elements

  • Everything you need, nothing you don’t.
  • Made from the best materials on the planet.
  • Sewn in New York.
