How Do I Choose the Right Commuter Bike?

A lot of people ask me what commuter bike they should buy. Here’s what I say.

Go with something steel. Yes, it’s heavier than aluminum, but it’s also a lot more comfortable, especially on city streets full of pot holes and uneven pavement.

And then there’s the question about whether to buy a single speed or a bike with gears. It really depends on how you use the bike. I prefer gears because I live in San Francisco. If you live somewhere flat, a single speed is great because they’re less maintenance.

Whatever bike you choose, you’ll want fenders. Go with a company called SKS. They’re German made and work great. Get a bell as well. Brass ones sound the best. And lights are a must. I ride a lot in dark areas so I have a 400 lumin front light. But you might be able to get away with something a little less powerful.

In terms of tires and wheels, I usually suggest a 700c size wheel and 32c tires. That setup is fast and comfortable.

The most important advice I can give, however, is get out and ride. It doesn’t matter what bike you’re on. If you commute on a bike you’re going to save money, and you’ll definitely feel better when you get to work.
