All those individually branded glass growlers from your local breweries are cool. They look cool sitting on top of your refrigerator and you look cool when you show up at your friend’s house with one in hand.
I have several local growlers myself. But lately I’ve left them at home in favor of the 64-oz insulated growler from Hydro Flask. It might not be as trendy, but it’s a lot more useful.
Case in point. We have season tickets to the University of New Mexico football team. They’re one of, if not the worst teams in the country. Jokingly bad. But we don’t go for the game. We go to tailgate and drink beer.
In the early part of the season, and actually well into October, it’s blazing hot out in the stadium parking lot. Temps sit in the 90s and everyone scrambles for shade. Normally, we have to pack all our growlers into the cooler to keep everything cold and drinkable. Not so with the Hydro Flask growler. It can sit out by itself for hours and the beer stays cold, crisp, bubbly and amazing.
I haven’t taken the thing camping yet, but that’s a no-brainer use. If you live by the water it’s probably great for fishing.
This winter, the growler will also be my thermos for ski trips because it keeps things hot as well. Especially in the early season, we often spend hours in the car chasing storms so 64-ozs of coffee can be thrown back no problem. If we don’t finish all the coffee on the way up, we’ll finish it on the way back because it’ll keep liquids hot for up to 12 hours.
Like all good gear, the growler is pricey. But like a good sleeping bag or running shoes or bike bibs, the investment is worth it.
